Who We Are

The Southern Africa Region Climate Action Network (SARCAN). It is the region’s largest climate network made up of more than 300 civil society organizations in southern Africa, fighting together to combat harmful climate change.  SARCAN is the regional node of Climate Action Network (CAN) International. It is a network of civil society organisations working collaboratively to advance climate justice, strengthen climate resilience, and promote equitable and sustainable development across Southern Africa. SARCAN has evolved into a dynamic, member-driven network with representatives from 2 Portuguese, 3 French and 8 English speaking countries.

Affiliated to Climate Action Network International (CAN-I), SARCAN, with its diverse membership and long history of building and steering the climate movements, continues to seek alignment and build bridges with regional partners and stakeholders throughout the climate and economic justice movement and to pressure northern governments to take bold and urgent climate action to end the era of fossil fuels, while addressing the needs of the most vulnerable people affected by the climate crisis in the region. SARCAN advocates that wealthy, industrialized nations fulfill their historical climate obligations by providing adequate, grant-based financing to developing regions, using the Common but Differentiated Responsibilities (CBDR) principle as a foundation for climate justice.

SARCAN also urges Southern African governments to take leadership and be ambitious in its climate actions and making voluntary efforts to locally mobilize (Mitigation, Adaptation, Loss and Damage), while aiming for 100% Renewable Energy, in an era of trickling climate financial resources.
